Rockstar: Satira without direct references in GTA VI – Avoid the "Reality Check"

Rockstar Games intends to maintain political satire at the centre of GTA VI, but has chosen a more blurred approach than previous titles, avoiding too explicit references to contemporary reality. The statement was made by Rupert Humphries, Senior Vice President of Narrative, in an interview published by Love Magazine. According to Humphries, the main difficulty lies in the long development of the game and in the need to create a world that reflects the present without binding on specific political figures or events. “Our goal is to create games that are very focused on the moment they are released, but that do not limit themselves to a faithful reproduction of reality,” Humphries explained. “We do not want to be too close to people, events, movements or anything. ” This does not mean the absence of politics in the fictional state of Leonida, set in the world of GTA VI. Rockstar will continue to use elements such as elections, political campaigns, automatic phone calls and radio advertising to build a satirical and recognizable environment. The main strategy is to adapt contemporary phenomena, deforming them in an absurd way to maintain the characteristic tone of the series. “We focus not only on the reflection of reality, but on its satire: to make it bigger, more grotesque, more exaggerated,” added Humphries. “Otherwise, you could just go out of the house and live in the real world. ” Humphries mentioned conspiracy theories and public reaction to everyday events as subjects of interest. Rockstar prefers to transform these phenomena into distorted versions rather than faithfully reproduce them. The choice is motivated by the need to keep the game relevant in time, avoiding obsolete jokes related to political characters or memes of the moment, as he had already pointed out Rob Nelson, co-studio head of Rockstar North, highlighting how "very specific political issues or memes grow old quickly". This strategy allows Leonida to tease contemporary society without depending on the news of the day, keeping the world of play relevant even after its publication.
