Take-Two Defenses the GTA 6 Netflix Strategy, Generating Frustration in the Community

Rockstar Games’ decision to release the exclusive premiere of Grand Theft Auto VI on Netflix is fueling a heated debate within the video game community. Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick provided a detailed explanation of the motivations behind this choice, particularly focusing on the promotion of streaming service. Rockstar announced that “Grand Theft Auto 6: An Extended Look” will be available on Netflix on August 27, with priority and exclusive access. Despite the publication of the same material on Rockstar's YouTube channel six hours later, many fans expressed disappointment at this strategy, perceiving a form of deception. The dissatisfaction also comes from other choices of the study, including the high price of the game, the absence of the physical version and the possible expiration of the download code. Zelnick explained that Rockstar considered Netflix a “good way to show the extended trailer” and did not provide details about the trade deal with the streaming service. He pointed out that the content will be accessible on YouTube six hours after the Netflix debut, defining the initiative an attempt to "try new things and promote the title". During his statement to IGN, Zelnick avoided providing direct information on the content of the trailer, limiting itself to praise Netflix. “Well, as you can imagine, I’ll just say great things about Netflix,” he said. “If you’re not subscribed to Netflix, you should definitely be. And as for the trailer itself, it will come soon, so I will let you draw your conclusions.” This strategy further exacerbated the frustration between franchise fans, highlighting a debate on industry mentality and attitude towards player reactions.
