PS5 and Xbox in strong growth after the publication of the GTA VI Extended Look

The British console market has accelerated sharply in the Grand Theft Auto VI Extended Look Week. NielsenIQ figures indicate a 33% increase for PlayStation 5 and 34% for Xbox Series X|S compared to the previous week. The percentages show an almost identical movement for the two platforms, although the absolute volumes of the units sold were not published. GTA VI’s Extended Look was published on 27 August 2026 and lasts about 27 minutes. Netflix has recorded 31.1 million views for the film, distributed globally and also available with subtitles in Italian. The platform also specifies that the images were acquired entirely from an in-game version for PS5. The weekly leap comes after a weak phase for hardware in the UK. At the end of July, the market fell by 14.4% compared to the same period of the previous year. PS5 marked a 32% contraction, while Xbox Series X|S maintained an increase of 3.1% on an annual basis. In the same week it increased by about a third also Switch 2. In this case, however, the data could have been influenced by the imminent price increase, an element distinct from the spread of Rockstar Games. The picture published along with the data also reports PS5 shortcomings at several British retailers, which may have further limited the sales of the Sony console. The temporal coincidence between the publication of the Extended Look and the growth of the two consoles is compatible with a promotional effect linked to GTA VI, but the available numbers do not show a causal relationship alone. There is also no data to determine whether the purchases were directly motivated by the game or other commercial factors that occurred in the same week. The comparison remains confined to the United Kingdom and cannot be automatically extended to other markets, but it is a clear signal that can be a useful measure also for the Italian market. The Grand Theft Auto VI is scheduled for November 19, 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S: the Netflix movie offers a first measurable data on the interest around the game, while the actual hardware sales hold can only be evaluated with later detections and full volumes.
