Rockstar North: The Key to the Success of GTA VI is the "realistic sentiment"

Rockstar North clarified his visual philosophy for Grand Theft Auto VI, pointing out that the goal is not to reach an apparent photorealism, but rather to create a “realistic feeling”. Rob Nelson, responsible for the development of the game, explained that “the goal is not to be realistic, it is to be perceived as realistic. ” While most of the industry focuses on photorealism, driven by hardware limitations, Rockstar Games is deliberately avoiding the so-called "uncanny valley". As Nelson points out, the photorealism ages rapidly: games that aimed at maximum realism for some years appear already faded and strange compared to stylized titles of the same period or even earlier. The main reason lies in the fact that, approaching reality, every compromise becomes evident. A game destined to last a decade cannot afford to date in three years. Choosing a slightly stylized style, GTA 6 ensures greater longevity than pure realism rarely offers, while maintaining a new standard for the appearance of a video game. This approach is not unpublished for Rockstar. The study has always preferred the style to pure reality, especially when it comes to Grand Theft Auto, as Nelson confirms in Troiscouleurs. The controversial and popular Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas was based on almost cartoonistic exaggerations while Grand Theft Auto IV was rooted but stylized in its gritty appearance. Red Dead Redemption 2, the most realistic game ever made by the studio, used pictorial lights and enhanced animation timing rather than a cold photorealism. Nelson's comments are not a new direction, but the reassessment of what always worked for Rockstar. Considering what we have seen of GTA VI in the last four years, their approach is giving fruit. Rockstar continues to favour style with respect to pure realism, and GTA 6 maintains this trend. There are also practical advantages for players: a slightly stylized world reads better in movement. The faces are more expressive, the most decided silhouettes. Chaotic pursuit remains readable instead of falling into visual noise. This is one of the reasons why Grand Theft Auto V still produces impact screenshots at a distance of more than ten years, so that many stylized games photograph better than their photorealistic rivals. Pure realism can make a barren open world. A deep-rooted come-book look keeps the world alive and readable in the best Rockstar style. This approach is not exempt from risks: if the style becomes too marked or is applied inconsistently, it may conflict with the drama crime tone on which the series is based. Rockstar's best work is successful when artistic direction and narrative go in the same direction. The apparent GTA 6 comic book works only if it remains subtle, as Nelson insists. Running this balance incorrectly is the real danger here. Ultimately, Nelson is trying to say that Rockstar is building GTA 6 to make it look good even years from now, after the photorealistic presentations of the next generation of consoles will begin to fade.
