Rockstar: The Ultimate Sprint Before GTA VI - An unusual Approach to Quality Control

A few months after the World Exit scheduled for 19 November 2026, interesting details emerge on the final quality control process of Grand Theft Auto VI. Rockstar North's former technical director, Obbe Vermeij, revealed how the studio, before any GTA game reached the "gold" state, suspended every activity and the developers dedicated themselves to playing their game, identifying bugs. Vermeij, a key figure in the definition of the GTA 3D universe (also contributing to titles such as Grand Theft Auto III, Vice City, San Andreas and GTA IV), describes an unusual approach: for two weeks before the release, the entire development team played the title from start to finish, trying the missions in order and living the plot to identify any problem. The practice, which provided work with the headphones worn for eight hours a day, with only occasional meetings, was supported by a small number of people in charge of important decisions regarding gameplay and plot. Most of the time was dedicated to bug correction, often randomly when programmers and artists seldom had the opportunity to get an idea of how the missions took place until they tried the final version of each GTA series. Vermeij explained that this “tradition” was maintained during the development from GTA III to GTA IV, although it is not clear if it continues for Grand Theft Auto VI.
