Take-Two Defenses the Disc Band: 90% of GTA VI Digital Business

Strauss Zelnick, managing director of Take‐Two Interactive, reiterated the company’s decision to distribute GTA 6 in physical format, including a digital download code within the package, alongside PlayStation’s choice to discontinue the production of records from 2028. The statements were released during a session of questions and answers followed by the publication of quarterly financial results, in which Zelnick explained that today more than 90% of Take‐Two's business is linked to digital distribution. According to the CEO, for many large games the presence or not of a disk no longer makes a difference, especially considering the need to download updates, register online or install additional content. “Our business is 90% digitally distributed,” said Zelnick. “It’s already a digital business. So, in some cases, especially when talking about a great game, the discs – and I emphasize disks – really don't make sense to the consumer. Moreover, in most cases you have to register online to play. So if you're already connected, what if you download the game in digital? It's the same thing and it's much more comfortable. ” Zelnick has specified that Take‐Two does not intend to completely abandon the physical market, but now considers it a niche, comparable to that of vinyl in the music industry. “That’s where, according to us, the market is going, and I think Sony has understood it too. Of course we did. This does not mean that we will no longer publish physical editions: we will do it every now and then, just as in the musical field there is still vinyl. But in many other cases, it will simply make no sense. ” The CEO's statements arrived a few days after Sony had finally broken the silence on the decision to end the production of PlayStation discs, stating that at the moment the choice is not having any impact on the business and that it does not preview negative effects even in the future, while recognizing the "strong opinions" expressed by the videoludic community.
