Exclusive Streaming GTA VI on Xbox Cloud Gaming: The Official Note

Microsoft had just announced a historic deal with Rockstar Games for the exclusive streaming of GTA 6 through Xbox Cloud Gaming, based on internal statements by CEO Asha Sharma. According to The Verge, Sharma would mention a partnership for the streaming distribution of the game to the launch, raising great expectations among fans. However, the news was immediately denied officially by Microsoft. Matthew Ball, Xbox's Chief Strategy Officer, stated on his social channels that the information from Verge was wrong. The deal would have seen Xbox gain exclusive rights for streaming GTA 6 per day one, offering an alternative to players without PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X/S consoles. This option would be integrated with the launch of the new pay-as-you-go model of Xbox Cloud Gaming, accessible via PC and time-paid smartphone, a novelty introduced by Microsoft in November 2026. Despite this, the deal would impose monthly limits of hours of streaming to Game Pass subscribers (15 hours for Ultimate, 10 hours for Premium and 5 hours for Essential), considered insufficient for a game like GTA 6. At the same time, Microsoft was developing the new Xbox hardware, Project Helix, with external partnerships, exploiting GTA 6 as a tool to promote broad-scale cloud gaming. It remains to be seen whether this strategy will be successful, depending on the appeal of the pay-as-you-go model and the duration of the exclusivity on streaming.
