Former developer Rockstar: "Big Money Policy" and the role of governments behind the GTA VI regional block on PS5

The recent restrictions imposed by Rockstar Games at the launch of Grand Theft Auto VI for PlayStation 5, which restrict the ransom of records based on the account region, have strengthened the arguments for physical support. A former studio animator, Mike York – who worked on projects including GTA 5 until 2017 – expressed himself with harsh words, defining these limitations as a “money policy”. In an interview with Covers.com, York attaches the responsibility of this choice to external factors, especially government policies aimed at blocking the game. According to York, Sony is not the only responsible part: the GTA 6 code for PS5, contained in the package and redeemable only for regional PlayStation accounts, prevents players from importing copies at lower prices. This situation creates additional drawbacks for console owners who travel frequently. In addition, there is an even more severe restriction: in Japan, the code could expire after 170 days. Unlike Microsoft, where digital purchases are more flexible, Sony does not allow a simple change of region, which is possible on Xbox and Nintendo consoles. Players often resort to secondary accounts to bypass these limitations, but this violates Sony Terms of Service. Rockstar would also avoid controversy by distributing GTA 6 on physical support, a more convenient choice for buyers who move between countries and offers the possibility to exchange or resell the game. York also suggests that the study could be motivated by paranoid about leaks of news that could compromise marketing campaigns.
