GTA VI: Three Projects Cancelled by Rockstar – From the Conception of GTA Tokyo to Agent Trevor

By GTA6 Hub editorial team

The potential return of GTA Tokyo and the idea of Agent Trevor, two projects abandoned by Rockstar Games that fed fan fantasy. Let's find out the details of these unpublished titles that have never seen the light, after years from the leak of the source code of GTA 5. In December 2003, Take Two Interactive filed trademarks for GTA, including future projects such as GTA 6 and other titles set in exotic cities: GTA Sin City, GTA Bogota and especially GTA Tokyo. Although the saga has consolidated around Vice City, Los Santos and Liberty City, the idea of a Grand Theft Auto in the heart of the Japanese capital, with its frantic urban environment and vibrant culture, has never been completely abandoned. A data miner, following the leak of the source code of GTA 5 in December 2023, rediscovered mentions to the development of GTA Tokyo for PS2. The Time Extension portal, through an internal source, a former developer of Rockstar Games (undisclosed identity), reported that the idea was initially proposed by Sam Houser after a promotional trip to Tokyo for GTA 3. The difficulty in carrying out accurate cultural research and in creating an effective satire led to the abandonment of the project, with regrets how much it was missing at Rockstar Games. Also the idea of “GTA Agent Trevor” - a narrative expansion focused on the crazy character played by Aaron Paul - was in development as DLC for GTA 5. In December 2013, Rockstar Games announced plans to add new content to history in 2014, promising “actions, chaos and unexpected adventures” involving Michael, Franklin and Trevor in southern San Andreas. Another official announcement of April 2, 2014 referred to “DLC of really exciting story mode”. However, Rockstar Games focused on support for GTA Online and the development of Red Dead Redemption 2, leaving the idea of a DLC focusing on Agent Trevor outstanding. The discovery by the data miner of references to this potential content has rekindled the hope for fans.
