GTA VI: High Production Costs Threatening Sony Strategy for PlayStation 5

The long-awaited launch of Grand Theft Auto VI, set for November 19, 2026, could be a proud hit for Sony and its PlayStation 5, but also a significant challenge related to production costs. The price increase of memory components, especially those used in artificial intelligence, is putting Rockstar Games' budgets to a tough test and, consequently, Sony's operational strategies. According to market analysis, Rockstar's new title could stimulate an increase in software sales for PlayStation 5, trying to counter the recent slowdown of the console. Sony's strategy, which largely relies on the popularity of the Grand Theft Auto franchise, is likely to be compromised by these financial difficulties. Serkan Toto, founder of Kantan Games, predicts that “GTA VI will be available only on consoles and the vast majority of new users will choose a PlayStation 5”. The launch of the game is expected at a price of US$79.99 (about R$430), with an exclusive digital edition. Sony also announced plans to abandon the production of physical media by 2028, a decision that is already creating debate among consumers. Ampere Analysis's analysis suggests that GTA VI could be a key element to reverse the downward trend in hardware sales and increase revenue from the software. Grand Theft Auto V has exceeded 230 million units sold since 2013.
