Rockstar, Total Dive: GTA VI Developers Document Florida with Poliziotti and Gangster
According to an interview, the authors of Grand Theft Auto 6 undertook meticulous research on the territory, travelling with policemen and gang members to immerse themselves in the true essence of Florida. An ambitious approach, defined by Rockstar Games, which emphasizes the importance of such a thorough research work. "Every game we make starts with research trips," explained development manager Aaron Garbut at LOVE Magazine. "This is the moment when we can explore both the place in question and our ideas as a team." The initial process saw some team members spend time exploring Miami and the surrounding towns, up to Key West, documenting details that extend to the Florida Keys. "It is one of the best parts of the whole project: a car full of friends traveling for days, they talk about what they want to accomplish and immerse themselves in the places and their ideas," Garbut said. During the explorations, the team listened to numerous stories collecting information from police officers and members of criminal organizations – described as "adorable" – but also getting to know often disturbing details. This in-depth research is reflected in the team’s intention to create a “believable and varied world, with a certain thickness”, as Garbut points out. The work has led to the documentation of extreme aspects of life in Florida, from wealth to poverty, from excess to madness, passing through techniques of survival. The experience was further enriched by direct observations – like a live concert by Beyoncé – and contributed to shaping the credible and detailed world that defines Leonida in GTA VI, with its 170 animal species and six regions. How much of these experiences lived by Aaron Garbut and his collaborators will we actually find in the game? The launch of Grand Theft Auto 6 is scheduled for November 19 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.
