The analysis of the “Criminal Profile” reputation system reveals an innovative mechanics designed to make the player’s choices in GTA VI unprecedented narrative impact. As illustrated during a private presentation in Rockstar North's studios, the development team led by Rob Nelson developed a system that is not limited to rewarding or punishing players based on aesthetic criteria, but assesses the coherence and effectiveness of their criminal actions. The "Criminal Profile" divides the actions of Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos into four main categories: Professional, Aggressive, Violent and Psycho. Each category is defined by the behavior of the protagonists during the missions; a clean robbery, without victims and with a strategic escape will keep the character in the "Professional" band, while a violent and uncontrolled escalation will push him towards more extreme levels. Nelson stressed that there is no “right way” to play: the system records the consistency of the actions, affecting both the surrounding environment and the development of the main plot. Jason and Lucia have distinct profiles, accessible through a dedicated menu section, allowing players to manage a methodical character or, passing to the other, take a radically different approach. The romantic relationship between the two protagonists is also influenced by the choices made in adventure. A crucial point is the passage from the "Psycho" level to the irreversible one: by accumulating extreme actions, the profile icon cracks and, once shattered, remains broken throughout the duration of the game, without possibility of recovery. This mechanism, comparable to Arthur Morgan's honor management in Red Dead Redemption 2, introduces an element of self-control and real consequences in player choices, eliminating the traditional moral bar on the screen and focusing on the efficiency, control and intensity of violence used during crimes. Even small daily gestures, such as dealing with respect to the surrounding environment, can affect the criminal profile of the protagonists.
