GTA VI: The love between Jason and Lucia – A Time-Based System

The attention Rockstar placed on the relationship between Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos in GTA VI is a central element of gameplay, but does not impose any obligation. As the development manager explains during a recent interview, the game offers mechanisms to manage love – or its absence – without penalizing the player’s choices. The relationship between the two protagonists is based on a system of “shared time”. Progress does not depend on explicit romantic gestures, but from the time spent together, which can be used to explore the open world, participate in activities such as playing pool, minigolf, kayaking or – more unexpectedly – robbing shops and banks. There is no clear distinction between romantic activities and gameplay: the value is given by the time spent together, whatever the activity. Small gestures, such as walking by hand, buying one sandwich to another or making group purchases, contribute to strengthening the relationship, while ignoring the other can have negative repercussions. The development team deliberately avoided creating an artificial caricature of intimacy, reflecting the approach that does not impose on players romantic engagement. As a shared element even in case of breakup, the characters maintain a “relationship attribute” and the money in the bank, as well as being able to interact verbally and indicate their position. It is possible that Jason and Lucia decide to leave, while remaining complicit in the context of the game. This element, the result of a question posed to the development manager in July, emphasizes the flexibility of the relationship system, but without interrupting the narrative flow of love history. The gameplay rewards Jason and Lucia’s commitment or indifference to their relationship; both approaches are valid and do not adversely affect the gaming experience.
