Rockstar Block Mod and Customizations on GTA VI: The Unexpected Strategy

The new Rockstar Games guidelines on the Grand Theft Auto VI modding, published in view of the launch in November, are an unexpected turning point in the open-world video game scene. The document, released before the game, establishes significant restrictions on amateur changes, drastically limiting the expansion of plots, maps, characters and other elements of the “continuity consolidated”. Basically, players will not be able to add new missions, alter the environment or create alternative ports. The irony is that this decision only arrives three years after Rockstar had attempted to close FiveM, the multiplayer framework that relaunched GTA 5, and then in 2023 acquired Cfx.re, developer of FiveM. As an opponent to an official partner, with a percentage on cashouts to make as a glue. The most significant novelty concerns monetization: the paid mods can be distributed exclusively through “suppliers of digital windows approved” by Rockstar, that is the Cfx Marketplace, the official store of the modifications authorized for GTA 5 – born as an extension of FiveM and RedM clients. This approach suggests centralized control and strict regulation of the mod market, unlike other publishers like EA, who opened the Sims Marketplace allowing the sale of content created by the community. The rules also aim to protect the integrity of the “official continuity”, prohibiting the use of Arthur Morgan in GTA 6 and limiting reverse engineering to allow the game on unsupported platforms, a particularly relevant restriction since GTA VI will debut exclusively on PS5 and Xbox Series X without a PC version. For multiplayer changes, the only allowed way remains the FiveM licensed platform. The online reaction was of strong disappointment on the part of modders, many of which criticized these measures as intimidating tactics difficult to enforce. The situation raises questions about the future of modding in GTA VI and how much Rockstar will be willing to tolerate player customizations.
