Rockstar Restrictions on Mods in GTA VI Launch Advance

Rockstar Games updated the mod guidelines, introducing more stringent measures in view of the upcoming launch of Grand Theft Auto VI. The move aims to prevent changes to the plot and cross-game asset, limiting the creative freedom of the modding community. For years, the GTA modding community has operated with its freedom, creating mods that ranged from simple additions to aesthetics to complex narrative processing. However, Rockstar has now defined a net boundary, recognizing the potential impact of changes in the consistency of the gaming experience and its business model. The new rules expressly prohibit the manipulation or expansion of the main plot, the creation of alternative missions or the modification of key characters within the world of GTA VI. The idea of seeing Lucia Caminos and Jason Duval engaged in scenarios created by fans, or integrating elements from other Rockstar games, was officially excluded. The restrictions also extend to the intellectual property of third parties: mods cannot include copyrighted assets such as music, art, characters or even places in the real world. This includes the dream of seeing an intersection between Grassrivers and Port Gellhorn, or the presence of Dre’Quan Priest in a map inspired by Ambrosia. In addition, the multiplayer modding will require the use of the official Rockstar Creator Platform, licensed directly from the studio. Porting games on unofficial platforms is strictly prohibited. These rules also apply to Rockstar's existing titles, such as GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2, making it essential for modders to consult the full updated document on the official website before publishing their own creations. Despite the restrictions, Rockstar reiterated its commitment to handling abuse, bullying and harassment within the modding community, and monetization through mod remains prohibited if not authorized through the Creator Platform.
