GTA VI: The Marketing Campaign, a Brand Success or a Delusion?

With the launch scheduled for November 19, it is difficult not to reflect on how the marketing campaign for GTA VI developed compared to that of GTA IV and V. The wait for this new chapter seems very different; in the past we had more substantial and controlled releases, with trailers, murals and TV spots that built the hype gradually. GTA IV has offered a similar approach, while V has created suspense with the individual trailers of the characters, a presentation of the well-made gameplay, the revelation of GTA Online and memorable moments like Steven Ogg shoots in New York. The situation for GTA VI was drastically different. The game was already widespread online a year before the first official news, followed by long periods of silence that fed speculations. The few trailers released – one initially promising, then another by surprise and finally the "cover trailer" – were interrupted by further silences. Interviews, tweets and subsequent articles provided fragmentary information instead of a guide narrated by an expert voice. The definitive leak, orchestrated by Cyberleek, has erased all uncertainty on the game map and its design, offering marketing possibilities. The "Extended Look" trailer on Netflix was perceived as a random addition to the process. The initial success of the campaign was based mainly on the influence of the brand "GTA" and long-awaited, rather than on a particularly creative or intense marketing strategy. Despite this, the leaks (especially those of 2022 and Cyberleek) will probably remain impressed in the memory of those who followed the campaign. It is right to ask whether GTA VI can disappoint expectations. However, the marketing experience so far has been considerably less memorable than that of previous games, leaving a sense of loss of mystery and magic, mainly fueled by the unfavorable circumstances of the leaks.
