Not a month, not a week, not a day: six hours of difference between who pays and who doesn't, and that's enough because half the Internet shouted at the “scandalo”. From now on we read indignant comments under every official Rockstar post. There are those who speak of incorrect operation, who swears that if he had done it any other study (Bethesda is often mentioned, who knows why she always) would have been massacred in the worldview, and there is also who uses the word “scum”. I see it differently, and since no one here pays me to pretend fairness, I tell you without too many words: this polemic is one of the most fragile of recent years, and I am about to disassemble piece by piece. Six hours. The great “scandalo” of the century. We start from the objective data: Rockstar didn't hide the video forever behind a paid wall. This is a temporary preview, a competitive advantage offered to customers with active subscription, exactly as it has been happening for decades with every form of early access: from press projections of films to paid streaming concerts that then end free on YouTube the next day. No one shouts at the scandal when a cinema makes the preview reserved to the press the evening before the official release. The logic is identical, only spread over six hours instead of twenty-four. And above all: those who do not pay do not lose anything substantial. It does not lose exclusive content, it does not lose quality, it does not even lose the opportunity to participate in the online conversation, since the video will still be available on the same day. The only thing you lose who doesn't subscribe is the right to brag for six hours on social media to have seen it before. I understand that for a slice of the internet this equates to an existential tragedy, but it is not really a Rockstar problem. We're not talking about an improvised deal, but about the natural continuation of a partnership that brought titles like GTA in front of millions of subscribers who maybe don't follow a single gaming account on X, they don't read industry heads and they would never look at a trailer if they didn't appear directly under their noses as they run their home. Ignoring that audience for fear of a default polemic would have been a commercial error, not an arbitrary choice. Quello che noto e’ l’ennesima reazione esagerata di una fanbase che ha sviluppato una dipendenza dal ciclo di hype-anticipazione-lancio. Ricordo perfettamente le polemiche, simili, quando Bethesda rilasciava anteprime in streaming dei suoi giochi, sempre con tempi di esclusiva limitati e concessi solo a determinati gruppi. Sembra quasi un meccanismo programmato per creare drammi inutili: la frustrazione di chi non può accedere subito al contenuto viene amplificata dalla sensazione di essere “escluso” dal grande dibattito online. Il fatto che si parli di “scum” mi fa sorridere, è un linguaggio tipicamente usato per esprimere rabbia e impotenza, ma non ha alcuna relazione con la vera natura dell’operazione. Personalmente, trovo più interessante analizzare il gameplay mostrato nell'anteprima e capire quali sono le nuove meccaniche che Rockstar ha introdotto. Il fatto che si parli di operazione scorretta pensando a un qualche accordo segreto tra Netflix e Rockstar è una semplificazione eccessiva: siamo di fronte a un’opportunità commerciale, nulla di più. E ripetere che Bethesda viene citata spesso, sempre per lo stesso motivo, non aggiunge valore alla discussione.
