GTA VI: Exclusive Preview on Netflix, but with Paywall and Bonus Vice City
Rockstar has announced the publication of a long preview dedicated to Grand Theft Auto VI (with Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos at the center of the narrative), available exclusively on Netflix. The preview, scheduled for August 27 at 21:00 (Italian time), will be accessible on Netflix but will be released on YouTube only six hours later, creating a momentary paywall mechanism. It is expected that the preview will finally show the real gameplay of the game, raising great expectations among fans. The game, scheduled for November 19 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S, will be available in two editions: the Standard Edition at €79.99 and the Ultimate Edition at €99.99. The latter includes a series of premium content, including the luxurious 95 Grotti Cheetah, the revolver set Hawk & Little Morgan in Vercetti Estate style, custom weapon variants for Jason and Lucia, exclusive outfits, Jason’s safehouse vehicle, a buggy ’67 Vapid Dominator with dedicated garage, and access to shops and special activities in the game world. Moreover, those who pre-order or purchase the game by 20 November will receive the Vintage Vice City Pack, consisting of the two-tone sedan ’55 Vapid Stanier, the Shore Court Garage near Ocean Beach, vintage outfits and theme objects ’80 and ’90 of Vice City. Digital preorders will also include a free GTA+ month. Note that, in line with the expected release modes, the pre-load will be available from November 12 for both versions of the game (digital and physical, the latter containing only one download code). This determines the elimination of the used market. Finally, Rockstar clarified that "Grand Theft Auto VI is a single player experience", without mentions for GTA Online, whose release is expected in the future. The company thus inaugurates a new precedent, proposing exclusive trailers for payment or related to subscription services. What do you think? Mi convince poco l’idea di un paywall per un’anteprima di GTA VI, soprattutto se di durata così estesa. Il fatto che Netflix abbia accesso esclusivo per sei ore prima di YouTube è un campanello d’allarme: mi fa pensare a una strategia mirata a premiare i più fedeli abbonati e a generare hype tramite la scarsità, anziché a offrire al pubblico un’esperienza di anteprima vera. Il Vintage Vice City Pack sembra un'ottima ricompensa per chi preordina, ovviamente, ma l’eliminazione del mercato dell’usato mi preoccupa un po’. Non è la prima volta che Rockstar adotta scelte drastiche in termini di distribuzione, e temo che possa limitare il valore residuo del gioco dopo il lancio. Il blocco totale su GTA Online, invece, è una mossa rischiosa: sembra un tentativo di creare aspettativa per un’esperienza online potenzialmente diversa e più "premium", ma rischia anche di scoraggiare i giocatori che attendevano proprio la classica modalità multigiocatore del franchise. Vedremo come si evolverà la situazione con il pre-load a partire dal 12 novembre, ma mi aspetto una corsa all'acquisto per avere il gioco pronto al lancio e sfruttare al massimo tutte le opzioni di contenuto extra disponibili.
