Rockstar Games revealed how thoroughly its developers immersed themselves in the contemporary world of Florida while creating Grand Theft Auto VI. Instead of relying exclusively on photographs, maps, videos or previous games of the saga, the development team has made repeated trips through Miami and South Florida to collect first-hand reference material. According to senior vice president of the narrative Rupert Humphries, Rockstar tried to live as much as possible in Florida, including night travel in areas with former police officers, visits to discos and strip clubs, time spent on beaches, Everglades explorations, travel through the Florida Keys and observation of other areas of the state. A particularly unusual detail was Rockstar's decision to travel Florida at night with former law enforcement forces. The goal was not simply to see how Florida appears, but to understand how different environments feel after sunset, how neighborhoods change at night and how the communities perceive law enforcement officials. This research can affect much more than the scenography. It may inform the behavior of the PNGs, meetings with the police, dialogue, road arrangement, criminal activity, nightlife and the atmosphere Rockstar wants players to experience by exploring Leonida. Rockstar also specifically mentioned visits to discos and strip clubs as part of the research process. This naturally fits into the long-term interest of the GTA saga for nightlife and adult entertainment. The previous Grand Theft Auto games have repeatedly used clubs, bars, casinos and other entertainment venues such as environmental details and gaming sites. However, the search trip should not automatically be interpreted as confirming that each location visited by Rockstar will appear directly in GTA 6. Rockstar's statement describes the scope of the reference collection process, not a complete list of places or activities that will be playable. GTA 6 literally doesn't recreate the state of Florida. Instead, Rockstar transformed it into the fictitious state of Leonida, with Vice City as its most recognizable urban center. Rockstar describes Leonida as the setting for the story of Jason and Lucia, with their criminal journey across the state. This gives Rockstar considerable freedom over the simple reconstruction of Miami. Real Florida provides the foundations, while fictitious characters, commercial activities, communities, geography, wildlife, criminal organizations and social situations can be exaggerated to create distinctive satire that defines Grand Theft Auto.
