GTA VI: Rockstar Could Increase Frame Rate After Launch

By GTA6 Hub editorial team

GTA 6 will arrive at the launch on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S at 30 frames per second, a choice due to the complexity of the title and the technical challenges encountered during development. This decision was confirmed by Rob Nelson, head of development of Rockstar North, following a visit to content creator at the studio. However, the situation could change. Rockstar did not exclude the possibility to release an update that allows the game to reach 60 frames per second, as already done with GTA 5. The strategy of the study is to carefully evaluate the skills of its technical team to determine whether it is feasible to introduce a Performance mode to 60 FPS, both at the time of launch and in a closer future. GTA 6 is a technically ambitious project, with an unprecedented level of detail and a high number of simulated elements at the same time. This pushed the development team to the limit of the current console hardware. Despite this, Rockstar does not consider the frame rate of the initial version as an absolute limit, opening the door to possible future improvements. The previous GTA 5 is relevant in this context: the game was originally launched on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 at 30 FPS, and then benefit from updates that allowed 60 FPS to reach the latest versions. The situation with GTA 6 could follow a similar logic, with a potential increase in frame rate following additional optimizations and technical developments. At the moment, the 60 FPS issue remains open and will depend on Rockstar's ability to solve the technical challenges related to the complexity of the game.
