Dan Houser: "Absurd Ventures" and the Creative Future After GTA VI

The co-founder and former creative director of Rockstar Games, Dan Houser, is developing two new projects through his new company, Absurd Ventures, born in 2023 after his release from Rockstar in 2020. The projects, currently being developed by him and his historic writing partner Jeffrey “Lazlow” Jones, include the original settings “A Better Paradise”, “American Caper” and “Absurdaverse”. Absurd Ventures is focusing on a complete range of transmedia products: graphic novels, comics, fiction podcasts, books and animation. Houser has revealed his creative approach, constantly looking for new ideas and avoiding excessive influences from open-world games, explaining how critical analysis of existing title design can interrupt the creative process. “I always try to think about new ways to do it, not sit down and compare what I would do differently,” said Houser. This approach also extends to its current management: “I’m not a game designer, I’m rather a creative director.” Houser tells how, during his work on "Red Dead Redemption", he completely avoided Western and TV series, to avoid any influence that could compromise his vision of the game, emphasizing the importance of remaining faithful to his idea. While not knowing what “Grand Theft Auto VI” will hold – scheduled for November 19 and without its contribution – Houser expresses the hope that some of their creations will achieve the desired success.
