GTA VI: Powerful Realism and evolved NPC Behaviours – Community Reactions

When a video game reaches a level of realism that transforms itself into a simulation of everyday life, where is the boundary between immersion and frustration? This is the question that drives online discussions after the Grand Theft Auto 6 releases, the highly anticipated Rockstar Games title released on November 19 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. After thirteen years from the last chapter of the saga, developers are redefining the standards of the genre with an approach that promises greater depth but raises questions about possible complications. At the heart of the debate the words of Rob Nelson, co-responsible for development, released at TGG. Nelson explained how the behavior of non-playing characters (NPC) will react more subtle and realistically to player actions, especially in the relationship with weapons. Unlike the almost comic freedom offered by Grand Theft Auto 5, where it was possible to extract a pump rifle without causing reactions, in the new Vice City each gesture will have visible consequences on the surrounding environment. "Reactions are much thinner than the past," Nelson said. “If you carry a long weapon on your back, there is usually no problem. But if you hold it in your hand, people move away, react with nervousness. The number of weapons you carry with you and the way you handle them really make a difference.” Order forces will also adapt a progressive strategy: an initial warning followed by an escalation if the player takes a shooting posture with both hands on the weapon. This approach recalls the contemplative atmospheres of Red Dead Redemption 2, and Nelson acknowledged that the available technical power makes obsolete some previously granted freedoms. “In GTA 5 you could pull out a rifle in front of anyone without reactions,” he admitted. "This is no longer working because the level of behavioral sophistication required by our virtual population is now another." The community is divided. On Reddit and on social media, some users expressed concern about the imposition of a income statement, while others enthusiastically welcome the direction taken by Rockstar. “I’m here for the most total immersion possible”, wrote a user, “RDR2 remains the best game I’ve ever tried and I love that GTA 6 is following its tracks.” Another found a pragmatic compromise: “When I shoot a gun out, I'm probably going to do something worse than just show it, so that's all right for me.” Fuel management, new element for the GTA series, and its service stations will be key elements in the gameplay.
