Digital Foundry Analysis: GTA VI on PS5 – Reachable 60 FPS?

According to a Digital Foundry analysis, the AI QSSR-based upscaler could bring GTA VI’s performance to PS5, but reaching a 60 FPS mode remains unlikely. The analysis suggests that Rockstar Games, while offering “the best performance on PS5” with preorders, could point to frame rate less than 60 FPS to manage the complexity of the game world. The title, richly detailed and rich in NPCs, traffic, physics and environmental simulation, poses significant challenges to the standard PS5 CPU and PS5 Pro. Digital Foundry compares GTA VI with recent games like Dragon’s Dogma 2 and Baldur’s Gate 3, highlighting that crowded areas already test modern hardware. Despite the most powerful PS5 Pro GPU and support for PSSR overscaling, CPU improvements are limited, making it difficult to achieve high frame rate. Rockstar has historically given priority to superior graphics and environmental details compared to higher frame rate at the time of the launch of titles, as demonstrated by GTA 4, GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2, initially launched with a goal of 30 FPS. Although GTA 5 has subsequently received a 60 FPS update on more recent hardware, the main challenge for GTA VI lies in CPU optimization to manage the vast open world and its complex simulations. Therefore, although the QSSR upscaler can improve overall performance on the PS5 Pro, achieving a stable frame rate at 60 FPS still seems a difficult goal to achieve for GTA VI.
