Crunch at Rockstar North: extraordinary mandatory and renunciation to the overalls for the development of GTA VI

The debate on the exploitation of Rockstar Games employees is getting more and more lit in view of the launch of Grand Theft Auto VI. Testimonials collected by workers and union members representing staff in the United Kingdom reveal a worrying situation, characterized by extraordinary compulsory and strong wage disparities, especially in the study of Edinburgh, Rockstar North, responsible for the development of the game. According to these sources, the "crunch", or prolonged periods of excessive work, is still a structural element of the organization of Rockstar North, not an occasional exception. Numerous employees and representatives of the Rockstar Games Workers Union report that overtime is so frequent to be included directly in contracts, with a few weeks extended up to 80 hours during the final stages of development. A developer, always under anonymity, explained how this situation led the company to enter into contracts a waiver of the overalls provided by the regulations on working time, a mechanism that, in practice, significantly elevates the limits imposed for overtime. The union underlined that this waiver is revoked, but the main node remains the interpretation of the term "crunch". In fact, the company seems to want to justify maximum hours with specific and limited compensation, risking to throw away the question and undermine the protections of workers. The criticisms also extend to the pay system, characterized by little transparency criteria in the distribution of bonuses. Several employees complain of a lack of clarity in the motivations given for economic, often vague, inconsistent and subjective awards. "When the bonus is particularly high it can represent a significant gain, but it is often disappointing and ends up perceiving much less than expected for the year," a developer told, highlighting the difficulties and frustration generated by this situation. Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos, the two protagonists of GTA VI, are not involved in these dynamics.
