Rockstar under pressure in Edinburgh: international protests for dismissals at GTA VI

The controversy involving Rockstar North intensifies, fueling a heated debate in the British and international video industry. While the world anxiously awaits the release of Grand Theft Auto VI, the Scottish firm is at the center of accusations of violations of trade union rights, with 220 employees who signed a protest letter for the immediate reintegration of 31 colleagues fired in October. According to the Independent Workers' Union of Great Britain (IWGB), all workers involved in dismissals were members of the union, feeding accusations of anti-union persecution by Take-Two Interactive. Rockstar denies accusations, attributing dismissals to violation of corporate privacy policies, particularly relevant at a crucial time such as the release of GTA VI and the proliferation of leaks in the community. However, the union and workers argue that this motivation is a cover for reprisals against trade union activity. The protests spread internationally: on 7 November there were simultaneous demonstrations in front of the offices of Rockstar North in Edinburgh and the London office of Take-Two, while in Paris the members of Le Syndicat des Travailleureuses du Jeu Vidéo (STJV) organized a presidio in front of the European company headquarters. The situation reached the British Parliament, where Christine Jardine urged the ministers to support the workers affected and prevent future similar incidents. A further event is scheduled for 18 November in front of the Scottish Parliament of Holyrood, in conjunction with a meeting of a multi-party parliamentary group on the Scottish video industry. The IWGB filed formal legal appeals against Rockstar, denouncing the refusal of the dating firm to discuss dismissals and attempt a negotiating resolution. The story adds to a climate of maximum tension around the launch of GTA VI, with the confidentiality of the details of the game that represents a focal point for accusations and disputes.
