GTA VI: Rockstar Invests in 600,000 Animations for NPC – An Artistic Approach to the Play World

The attention to detail in the next chapter of the Grand Theft Auto saga intensifies with a surprising revelation: Rockstar Games is developing about 600,000 NPC-dedicated animations (non-playing characters) of GTA VI, a significantly higher number than that used in Grand Theft Auto V (55.000) and Red Dead Redemption 2 (300.000). This figure, confirmed by sources inside the studio, is not limited to a simple count; it represents Rockstar's commitment to creating an incredibly live and responsive gaming world. According to the development manager, the approach is radically different from simple algorithmic production. Instead of automatically generating the population, dedicated teams have “handmade” every single NPC, defining position, clothing, behavior and interactions. The games rooms have been populated with specific characters, each with its own history and style, creating a palpable and engaging atmosphere. This is a significant evolution compared to 2018, where production had doubled. This does not simply mean an increase in the number of animations, but a deep immersion in creating individual personalities for secondary characters. The artistic team has taken care of every detail, including tattoos and family stories, giving each NPC a unique and recognizable appearance. The team focused on the interaction with NPCs that goes well beyond the simple production routines of 2018, evolving the system to offer greater responsiveness and depth in character behavior. Despite the importance of this innovation, Rockstar did not disclose specific data about the number of passersby that coexist in an area, the distance of visual detail or the differences between versions per console, leaving this information as a crucial variable in creating the game experience. The focus remains on the overall impact of the approach: a city of Vice City (the new location) that reacts to the player’s actions in a more natural and credible way never seen before in an open world video game.
