GTA 6 on PS5: The Needed Space for the New Open World

Analyzing the size of the most recent titles on PlayStation 5, we can get an idea of how much space Grand Theft Auto VI will occupy. With the launch of the game scheduled for November 19, 2026, Rockstar Games will face the challenge of creating a vast open world as it seems intended to do, while taking into account the limitations of modern SSDs. Considering the size of the heaviest games available today, we can estimate the space needed for GTA VI. Titles like The Elder Scrolls Online (89 GB), Final Fantasy 16 (90.1 GB), Sniper Elite 5 (91.4 GB) and Rise of the Ronin (96.3 GB) show that new generations of open world can easily exceed 90 GB. Other titles such as Marvel's Spider-Man 2 (98GB), Far Cry 6 (101 GB), Horizon Forbidden West (101 GB), Baldur's Gate 3 (108.8 GB) and Destiny 2 (143 GB) confirm the trend. Even more "light" games like NBA 2K27 (115GB) or Star Wars Jedi Survivor (147 GB) exceed 100 GB if you consider all updates. Gran Turismo 7, with its numerous updates, can reach up to 140 GB and Assassin's Creed Valhalla* (142 GB with expansions) is another example. Given this average of over 100 GB per single game, and taking into account the fact that the 1 TB SSD of a PS5 Slim available at the time of release could be insufficient to host GTA VI, it is assumed that the title can easily occupy more than 200 GB, further limiting the number of games installed on the console. A PlayStation 5 Slim user with 1 TB and no external SSD, as provided by the current market, could theoretically install up to 6-7 heavy-duty titles.
