Netflix and GTA VI: Rockstar points to a "Show" to reach a wider audience
On August 6, Rockstar Games announced Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look, a special that will debut exclusively on Netflix on August 27 at 21:00 Italian time and will remain on the platform for six hours before being released on the official Rockstar channels. The details about the content of the special are still limited, but Strauss Zelnick, CEO of Take-Two Interactive, explained that Rockstar intends to structure the presentation as a real TV show, exploiting the collaboration with Netflix. During an interview with Bloomberg, journalist Jason Schreier asked Zelnick if the presentation would be designed to give the audience the impression of watching a Netflix program. The CEO's response was confirmed: “Yes.” Zelnick added that, once seen the special, viewers will better understand the reason for the partnership with Netflix, calling it an "unmissable event". At the moment, Rockstar did not specify the exact duration of the special nor its precise form, but it seems to be an extended presentation of the game, an insight into the development or, possibly, of a combination of the two. The strategy focuses on the goal of bringing GTA 6 in front of a wider audience than the only enthusiasts who already intend to buy it at launch. According to Schreier, Rockstar and Take-Two also point to Netflix users who are not regular players and those who show interest in the title but do not intend to pre-order it. Netflix’s communication also supports this direction, defining the collaboration “the next generation of storytelling and Netflix content”. Brandon Riegg, vice president of Netflix’s non-fiction series, explained the goal of the platform is to create a space where the most ambitious productions can reach an audience as wide as possible, regardless of the medium. The operation assumes particular importance considering that GTA 6 already generates great interest: the preorders have clearly exceeded the internal forecasts of Take-Two, as stated by Zelnick, described as "exceptional". The choice to collaborate with Netflix seems therefore less motivated by a need to increase the notoriety of the game and more from the desire to transform the launch into an event aimed also to an outside audience to the video industry, exploiting the reach of millions of spectators who do not follow the traditional promotional channels for video games.
