Rockstar: "No More Eighty Years" After GTA VI - A New Approach to Game Development

Rockstar took over eight years to develop Grand Theft Auto VI, but the studio aims at a significantly faster arrival for its next project. Speaking with Bloomberg, Phil Hooker, head of development of Rockstar, explained how the company expanded its team and developed its technology for the long-awaited upcoming game, and how this will facilitate the creation of future releases. Hooker said that the study plans to take advantage of the foundations established during the long production of GTA 6. "The engine, tools and team we built in this project will allow us to do things faster," he explained. He added that Rockstar wants to focus on expanding what has already been created rather than continually rebuilding its technology. "I feel confident that I can build on this base and go sideways instead of vertical to create more engaging content," he said. This approach should help Rockstar avoid another long waiting period between large outputs. GTA 5 was launched in 2013, followed by Red Dead Redemption 2 in 2018. GTA 6, however, is scheduled for 19 November 2026, following a series of delays. Its development has seen remarkable changes in Rockstar's structure, with the company that grew from 2.441 employees around the release of RDR2 to 4.711 units in 12 offices. There is a precedent for Rockstar that builds a new game relatively quickly by reusing existing technology. Grand Theft Auto: Vice City followed GTA 3 in less than a year. Rockstar's leadership hopes that the study can take a similar approach to future projects, now that much of the basic work for GTA 6 is complete. Of course, Rockstar hasn't announced its next major game yet. Comments do not even confirm that the next title of the Grand Theft Auto series will arrive quickly, especially considering the scope of the studio's ambitions. However, the systems built for GTA 6 will help Rockstar reduce the time it takes to solve technical problems. For now, Rockstar's attention remains understandably on GTA 6. The game is intended to be one of the biggest entertainment launches in history, with analysts predicting sales of tens of millions of units in its early months. Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos will make the difference in this new chapter.
