GTA VI: The Collector’s Box of Vice City – An Excessive Price Without the Game

Rockstar Games opened the preorders of “The Goodtime State – Vice City Collection”, a collection box sold on the Rockstar Store at $399.99 in the United States and £349.99 in the UK. The shipments will begin on November 19, the same day as the launch of Grand Theft Auto VI on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. The peculiarity is that the box does not include the game, but only an activation code. The content of the Collector’s Box focuses on merchandising inspired by Macca the Gator, an imaginary television series set in the state of Leonida (the videoludic version of Florida). The package includes a statuette of about 15 cm with openable compartment base, Oakley Frogskins black opaque glasses with Prizm Sapphire lenses and pink logo, a New Era 9FORTY A-Frame hat and a ripstop shoulder bag with personalized YKK zip. The rest is composed of collector's objects: a magnetic mirror in pink glass, a shot glass dedicated to Chunkee the Manatee, a decorative spoon not suitable for contact with food, a keychain shaped with bevelled edges, nine glazed pins in tin, nine stickers and a front-back poster showing the complete map of Leonida. Rockstar ranks the Collector’s Box as a collector’s item for seniors, not as a toy. The box measures approximately 48 x 34 x 32 cm, with a limit of one piece per customer and shipping available also in Italy (additional charge). The price is considerably higher than previous editions. In 2013, GTA V's Collector's Edition cost $149.99, including the game, a steelbook, a map, a value bag and a cap, while the Special Edition stopped at $79.99. Today, to get all this, you would spend almost $500. Rockstar presents the package as "a premium Collector's Box with all the essential to have fun", but many users interpret this formula as an unintentional provocation, given the absence of the game itself. The company has already adopted a similar approach with Red Dead Redemption 2, which offered a collector's box for about $100 without software. The stocks are limited and the sold out appears likely, while Rockstar also announced the production of a vinyl album up to $125.
