GTA VI on Switch 2? A former Rockstar launches a warning - and reveals its strategy

The question whether Grand Theft Auto VI will have a version for Nintendo Switch 2 came back afloat, thanks to an unexpected intervention by Jérémy Hartvick, former developer of Rockstar Games. In an interview with the YouTube channel Kiwi Talkz resumed by Dexerto, the former developer expresses strong doubts about the possibility that the title, expected for November 19, 2026 after two referrals, finds space on the Japanese hybrid console. Hartvick bases his analysis on the audience of reference and the typical choices of fans of the series. According to the ex-Rockstar, who buys a GTA VI game prefers to have the console on which the game was released, making it unlikely that a porting would not reach a sufficient audience. “I’m not convinced that the GTA VI audience matches Switch’s audience,” said Hartvick. However, the argument collides with the recent history of Nintendo. Titles like Cyberpunk 2077, Doom Eternal and Elden Ring Tarnished Edition have shown that the Switch family can also host unconventional games, while the Grand Theft Auto collection: The Trilogy - The Definitive Edition has demonstrated Rockstar's effectiveness in publishing titles on ungroomed platforms. The technical knot remains a determining factor. The new chapter aims at a vast open world and requires a performance of 30 fps, even on current consoles where reaching 60 fps is already a challenge. Hartvick raises the issue if making the experience less performing on a different platform, when anyone would buy a PS5 to play the title. The former developer does not completely exclude the possibility of cloud-based gaming solutions, considering them more realistic to expand supported platforms. An element that Hartvick neglects is the price factor. Even after the price increase, Switch 2 remains a more accessible console than PS5 and Xbox Series X, and enjoys a growing installed base. Rockstar, at the moment, did not issue official statements about the porting hypothesis on Switch 2 and did not provide indications about the later versions at launch. Therefore, those who hope to play in mobility will have to wait for official communications after the November debut.
